Junior engineer sent to jail in 14-year-old graft case

An anti-corruption court in Kashmir Valley today sentenced a junior engineer to three years in jail in a 14-year-old graft case.

Additional Special Judge, Anti-Corruption, Kashmir, Jeema Bashir today convicted Altaf Ahmad Chisti, a JE in Mechanical Irrigation Division Sopore.

Chisti was also slapped a fine of Rs 30,000, officials of the State Vigilance Organisation said here.

They said the case against Chisti was registered with the organisation in January, 1999 after a preliminary inquiry and it was proved during investigation that the accused had taken 53 GI pipes temporarily for digging tube wells in 1993, but never deposited them back.
 

The value of the misappropriated pipes was estimated to be around Rs two lakh, the officials said.
