Taking a dig at the AIADMK government over the law and order situation, DMK President M Karunanidhi today wondered if there was a "regime" in the state, citing some recent incidents of rapes and murders.

He asked Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to take steps to halt crimes against women, murders and roberries.

"I am not demanding her resignation as she used to do when she was in the opposition. She should come forward to uphold law and order in Tamil Nadu," the 91-year old former chief minister said in a statement here.

Referring to incidents of rapes and murders, including the sexual assault and killing of a 17-year-old Dalit girl near Karur on June 23 and the rape of two girls in a private hostel in Pollachi, Karunanidhi wondered if there was a "regime," in the State.

"Rather than focusing on taking vindictive action against those in the opposition, the Chief Minister should take steps without bias," he added.
