A sports officer who was kidnapped by the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was today released unharmed after 28 days in captivity, police said.

Meghalaya police said Manipur-born A N Sharma, a district sports officer posted in South Garo Hills, was left near the international border with Bangladesh at Ruga at day break.

His family had paid the outfit Rs 15 lakh as ransom, the police said.

"The officer arrived home in Baghmara at around 2.30 PM in the afternoon after travelling from Tura in a bus," Inspector General of Police (Operations) G H P Raju told PTI.

Singh had taken the first bus to Tura from Ruga, he said.

The sports officer was taken at gun point from his Tura home on July 10 and Rs 50 lakh was demanded from his family for his safe release.

Sharma hails from Moirang Khunou in Bishnupur district of Manipur and has been residing in Meghalaya for the past 25 years with his Garo wife and two sons.
