The kin of a 41-year-old man, who died in a road accident involving a rashly driven tempo here, has been awarded a compensation of over Rs 16 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT).

The tribunal asked Shriram General Insurance Co Ltd, which had insured the offending tempo, to pay Rs 16,31,920 to the family of Delhi resident Ashok, who died after being hit by the vehicle.

"The entire criminal case record supports and corroborates the case of the claimants in all its material particulars," MACT Presiding Officer Deepak Jagotra said.

"The petitioners (family of deceased) are awarded the total amount of Rs 16,31,920....The awarded amount be deposited by respondent no. 3 (insurance company)," the tribunal said.

According to the family members, on July 7, 2012, Ashok met with the accident with the tempo, which was being driven by one Sanjay in a rash and negligent manner, and sustained fatal injuries. He died later.

The family members of the deceased had filed a complaint with the tribunal seeking compensation from the tempo driver, insurance company and others. The insurance firm had sought dismissal of the complaint.
