A landslide at a stone-cutting site near a mountain has killed at least six labourers and injured two others in Pakistan's Punjab province, media reports said today.

A total of eight labourers working on the stone crushing site were buried under the landslide yesterday in the surrounding areas of Sargodha district, the Geo news reported.

Rescue officials reached the site after being informed of the incident and retrieved six bodies and two injured with the help of heavy machinery, it said.

The injured labourers, said to be in a critical state, have been shifted to a hospital for treatment.

According to eye-witnesses, the incident occurred when the labourers began climbing up a mountain using ropes so they could place explosives for blasting. However, before they could reach their designated position, a landslide occurred, taking the labourers with them.

In the last 15 days, nine people have died in the area in similar accidents, it said.
