The Los Angeles Police Department has opened an investigation into Harvey Weinstein after an Italian model accused the media mogul of rape in 2013.

The model told the Los Angeles Times that Weinstein bullied his way into her hotel room and forcibly raped her in the bathroom, reported Variety.

"The Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery Homicide Division has interviewed a potential sexual assault victim involving Harvey Weinstein which allegedly occurred in 2013," said LAPD spokesman Officer Tony Im.

"The case is under investigation."

Over 40 women have come forward to accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct after a New York Times expose revealed that he settled with more than eight women. The NYT story was followed by a more detailed report in the New Yorker.

Weinstein has since been fired from the Weinstein Company.
