A fresh plea was today filed in the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Divya Spandana alias Ramya, Kannada actress and social media in-charge of the Congress, for her alleged defamatory statements on social media against Chief Justice Dipak Misra.

The contempt petition was mentioned before a bench comprising the CJI and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, for urgent listing and hearing.

Lawyer Barun Kumar Sinha, appearing for petitioner advocate Arun Kumar, said the statements and tweets were against the judiciary and issued after the Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairperson M Venkaiah Naidu rejected the motion of opposition parties led by Congress to impeach the CJI.

The bench however declined urgent hearing and said the plea would come up in due course.

The petition alleged that Spandana, who looks after the AICC's social media section, had made certain "scandalous" remarks against the CJI in relation to the 'impeachment motion'.
