LF secures absolute majority in Tripura Panchayat polls

The ruling Left Front in Tripura has secured absolute majority in 563 Gaon Panchayats out of the total 591 and 28 of the 35 panchayat samitis and all the eight zilla parishad, elections for which were held Tuesday, official sources said tonight.

Secretary of the state election commission, Tamal Majumder said the BJP, for the first time, secured a majority in five gram panchayats, Congress in 18 panchayats and Trinamool Congress (TMC) in three Panchayats and the rest were won by Left Front candidates.

He said, election was held in ballots and the counting which began from July 17 was still continuing.
 

The elections were held for the 5,624 seats, including 419 seats for 35 panchayat samitis, 116 for eight zila parishads, and the rest seats for gram panchayats.

The total number of voters' were 11,08,100 and the total candidates were 13,754 of which 50% were women.

State Election Commissioner, Y. Kumar said, "50 percent seats of the three tier system were for the first time reserved for women and NOTA (None of the Above) provision has also been applied for the first time".
