A local court has sentenced a couple to life imprisonment while acquitting their son in a dowry death case here.

District and Sessions Judge Vijay Laxmi also imposed a fine of Rs 16,000 on the convicts Zulfikar (father-in-law) and his wife Munija Begum after holding them guilty under IPC sections 304B (dowry death) and 498A (cruelty) yesterday.

The husband Shehzad was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Shama Parveen was burnt to death by her in-laws Zulfikar and Munija Begum for failing to fulfil their dowry demands at Ghari Mujhera village in the district in December 4, 2013.

The father of the deceased had filed a complaint against Shehzad and her in-laws. All the eye witnesses, including the complainant, had later turned hostile.

The court found the accused guilty on the basis of the victim's dying declaration which was recorded in a hospital by Sub Divisional Magistrate Baburam.
