Madras Sappers to commemorate 237th anniversary from tomorrorw

Madras Engineer Group (MEG), also known as the Madras Sappers, will commemorate their 237th anniversary during a three-day event beginning here tomorrow.

The men of Madras Sappers, affectionately called 'Thambis' (Younger Brother) across all ranks, ages, both serving and retired, along with their families,will congregate at their sprawling alma mater, located near Ulsoor Lake to commemorate the event.

The event will commence by paying homage to the martyred soldiers at the War Memorial built by the 'Thambis' themselves, and wreaths will be laid to honor the sacrifices of the fallen heroes, an official release said.

It said subsequently, the 'Thambis' during the elaborate Mono Drill and ceremonial parade would showcase their clock-work precision, coordination and the team work.
 

Veer Naris (war widows) will be felicitated during the occasion, which will be followed by a conference of the Regimental Commanders to take a stock of the issues pertainingto training, career management and welfare of the Thambis andto find ways to refine and realign the training methodologies.

Madras Sappers (a regiment of the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army) draws its origin from the erstwhile Madras Presidency army of the British Raj.

It was raised at St Thomas Mount, Madras on September 30, 1780, as two companies ofPioneers.

The Corps, whose headquarters was moved to Bengaluruin March 1865, is the oldest among the three groups of the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army.
