A major fire broke out in the over 180-year-old Tamil Nadu government printing press here early today causing extensive damage to it.

However, there were no casualties, official sources said.

More than 10 fire tenders were pressed into service and doused the fire after several hours, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department sources said.

A major portion of the building at Mint Street in North Chennai collapsed due to the fire.

Though short-circuit is suspected to be the reason for the fire, an investigation would be conducted to ascertain the real cause, they said.

According to the state government website, the Stationery and Printing department undertakes all printing works of the government departments and organisations.

The department is considered as vital for the operations of all government offices, communications and maintenance of records. It was established on 17th December, 1831.
