Chin Peng, once Malaysia's most wanted man who led a bloody insurgency against British rule to establish an independent Communist state, died at a hospital here today.

Chin Peng, a former secretary-general of the now defunct Malayan Communist Party (MCP), died of old age, media reports said.

Chin Peng, whose real name was Ong Boon Hua, would have marked his 90th birthday on October 19.

Chin Peng led the MCP's guerrilla insurgency and fought against British and Commonwealth forces to establish an independent Communist state.

The communist insurgency failed and he lived in exile in Thailand and was not permitted to return in Malaysia.

His relatives will perform religious rites for him on Friday, Bangkok Post said.
