A Colombo-bound man was apprehended at the Chennai airport today for allegedly trying to smuggle US dollars worth Rs 10.3 lakh, CISF officials said.

Sukumaran, who hails from Tamil Nadu, was intercepted by CISF personnel after they noticed that he was carrying a large volume of currency in his bag, they said.

A thorough search of the passenger led to the recovery of USD 100 denomination 159 notes, to the tune of Rs 10.3 lakh, the officials said.

The passenger was travelling to the Sri Lankan capital from here.

Since he could not furnish any valid reason for carrying the foreign currency, the man was handed over to the Customs Department, a senior official of the security force said, adding that it seemed to be a case of currency smuggling.
