A 45-year-old man was today overpowered by police personnel after he allegedly attempted committing suicide by setting himself on fire outside the District Collectorate here.

Saravanan attempted to commit suicide by self immolation, seeking action against a tehsildar for "falsifying" his land document and giving the property to other people by labelling it as 'Poramboke', police said.

Last week, his wife, Parameshwari, also made a similar attempt outside the Collectorate for the same reasons but was controlled by women police personnel, they said, adding that the couple hails from Annur, about 35 km from here.

Saravanan had come to the Collectorate to submit a petition on the issue as it was 'grievances day' today, police said.

He suddenly took out a small can, poured kerosene over himself and tried to set himself ablaze. However, police there overpowered him and took him to the nearest police station, they said.

Police quoted Saravanan as telling them that the patta land was given to him by the government. Tehsildar Mettupalayam had given his land to other persons by wrongly certifying the patta land as 'Poramboke', he alleged.
