A man allegedly battered his wife and niece to death in the Tahbarpur area of Azamgarh district, police said today.
According to police, one Subedar Yadav attacked his wife Shubhawati (45), niece Mamta (12) and son Sandeep (12) with a brick while they were asleep in their house in Basahi Jarmejaipur village late last night.
While Shubhawati and Mamta died in the attack, Sandeep was seriously injured and has been admitted to hospital, police said, adding that Subedar has been arrested.
Police said that preliminary inquiry has revealed that the accused had been mentally unstable for the last few days.
