A man was beaten to death today by a mob on suspicion of being a thief, at Bhagabatipur in the district, police said.

The deceased, along with two others, had allegedly taken away the keys of a bike parked at a tea stall in the area under Sankrail police station, which was witnessed by a woman from a distance, a police officer said.

On hearing the woman scream to alert nearby people, the trio allegedly started hitting her, following which a mob gathered, he said.

The three started to panic on being asked about their identity, and during the melee, two persons managed to escape, the officer said, adding, the mob then beat the third one to death.

His body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and an investigation into the incident is underway, police said.
