A 27-year-old man was today detained here by the police for allegedly stabbing and grievously injuring his younger brother's wife.
The woman with deep cut injuries in her neck and lower abdomen is now undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College Hospital here.
According to Malgodown police, one Prabir Barik of Erasama area in Jagatsinghpur district had married only four days ago and the couple was staying in a lodge here near College Square.
"This afternoon, Prabir's elder brother Biswambar entered into the room in which the couple was staying and stabbed the newlywed bride twice with a knife", said local police inspector D P Patro.
Following a complaint by the lodge owner, the police apprehended Biswambar from Badambadi bus stand and seized a blood-stained knife from his possession.
Quizzing both the brothers, police learnt that Biswambar and the woman were in a relationship for over five years. But somehow, that relationship fell apart and the woman later enticed Prabir and married him secretly in a temple earlier this week, police said.
