A man who robbed people of their mobile phones after handing them stolen motorcycles, was arrested by police who laid a honey trap on him by using a fake identity of a girl through Facebook.

The accused identified as Sandeep Rai alias Dikky was arrested by personnel of Timarpur police station in north Delhi. His father is a retired vice principal and he worked as a data entry operator in Mukherjee Nagar.

With his arrest, police claimed to have worked out at least four cases where people were tricked of their mobile phones and three cases of Motor Vehicle Theft.

Recently, police had received a string of complaints where people reported that they had placed advertisements on online classifieds websites for selling their mobile phones.

"These people were contacted by Rai expressing interest in buying their phones. The accused used to hand over his motorcycle to the victim and leave on the pretext of showing the phone to someone, only to never return. On verification, all these bikes were found to be stolen," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma.

In all the cases, the accused had provided his mobile number which was always found to be switched off after the incident. In all the above incidents, it was observed that the accused used to cheat innocent students by responding to their advertisements on 'Quikr', police said.

"As his name was available, we checked Facebook profiles with this name. One of the complainants identified him through his profile picture. To trap the accused, a friend request with the name of a girl was sent to him. The accused accepted the friend request and he was persuaded to meet at GTB Metro Station. The accused fell into the trap and was apprehended," said Verma.

He has been identified by two of the complainants. The accused has stated that after cheating the innocent complaints he used to again sell those mobiles on 'Quikr'. Further investigation of the case is in progress.
