In a move that will ease pressure on overcrowded prisons in the national capital, the process of operationalisation of Mandoli jail here is underway and it is likely to start functioning from November.

Director General (Prisons) Sudhir Yadav said the process of operationalisation of Mandoli jail is on and it will take a few months to be completed."There are a lot of issues like shifting of inmates that are to be taken care of. It would be stage by stage. We will start some activities there hopefully by next month and it will take a few months to be fully operational," he said.

The officials said construction work on the jail was completed by PWD and some formalities are to be fulfilled before the jail could become operational.
"We are aiming to start Mandoli jail at the earliest but it depends on a few things. PWD, which is the construction agency, is seeking fire and construction completion certificates which are expected to be obtained soon, paving way for functioning of the jail," Mukesh Prasad, Additional IG (Prisons), said.
The process for shifting of the inmates has been started with drawing of a list of those who will be lodged in the new jail. The security apparatus of the jail is also to be taken care of and the personnel of Tamil Nadu Special Police and paramilitary personnel will be deployed for jail security, officials said.
Mandoli prison complex will have 6 jails having a capacity to accommodate 3,777 inmates. The entire complex is situated on 78.62 acres in north east Delhi.
As per latest data, the ten jails of Tihar prison complex and Rohini jail housed 14,183 prisoners against the capacity of 6,250 till December 31, 2015.
