killed a man in Narayanpatna area of Odisha's Koraput district suspecting him to be a police informer ahead of the ultras' Martyrs Week beginning tomorrow, police said today.

A group of about 12 ultras barged into the house of the man at Dasini village under Bandhugaon block in the district last night, forcibly took him to a deserted place in the outskirts and beat him up accusing him of assisting the police.

The attackers then slit the man's throat with a sharp-edged weapon, the police said adding the Maoists before leaving the spot left a letter charging the man with being an informer of the police.

Koraput superintendent of police Awinash Kumar has refuted that the man was informer. "The deceased was not our informer. The reason behind the killing is under investigation," he said.

Security has been tightened in the area after the incident, he added.
