Max Super Speciality Hospital in Mohali will soon start incompatible blood-group kidney transplant.

"Kidney transplant against blood group incompatibility is now going to be soon available at Max hospital at Mohali," Dr Sanand Bag, senior urologist, laparoscopic and transplant surgeon told reporters here on the sidelines of launching the hospital's state-of-the-art Renal Transplant Unit.

Dr Bag, who is heading the Unit, said that only a few institutes in India are performing the incompatible donor transplant surgeries, considered as high risk until recently.

A kidney transplant could not be performed unless both kidney recipient and his or her donor had compatible blood types.

"But now a days at hospital like ours, such surgeries are possible with good short term and acceptable long term results in lieu of efficient immunosuppressive treatment available. We can eliminate a recipient's reaction to an incompatible blood type, allowing more people to benefit.

However, as against normal transplant surgery costing Rs 3 to 3.5 lakh, the cost of incompatible donor surgeries range anywhere between Rs 7 to 8 lakh," he said.
