Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday asserted that the state government has initiated several measures to bring about comprehensive changes in the social welfare department.
Corruption is the major deterrent against development and this must be tackled to uplift people's condition through proper implementation of welfare schemes, Sonowal said at a programme at Raha in Nagaon district.
"The government is committed to improve the image of the social welfare department and its officials must extend active cooperation and support to achieve the target," he said at the programme organised by the department to mark the 'National Nutrition Month'.
He alleged that during the tenure of the previous government, funds meant for nutritional purpose of children, pregnant women and mothers were siphoned off and this had tarnished the image of the social welfare department.
He urged Anganwadi workers to perform their duties with responsibility and responsiveness in ensuring successful implementation of the National Nutrition Mission.
Sonowal said the Mission was rolled out in the country by the prime minister to ensure wholesome development of the people.
He said remunerations of Anganwadi Workers and Anganwadi Helpers were increased up to Rs 6,500 and Rs 3,250 by the central government recently and this would immensely encourage the workers at the grassroots.
