A 38-year-old under trial lodged at the Adharwadi jail in Kalyan allegedly committed suicide in his cell by hanging himself using a towel, police said today.
Ajay Deshmukh, who was arrested and jailed in connection with a chain snatching case by Sahapur police, took the extreme step yesterday during early hours. He was undergoing treatment for the last three years relating some mental illness, they said.
Police said none of his relatives visited him since he was arrested. The matter came to light when the jail staff took a routine round of the cells to call out inmates and found Deshmukh hanging.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and the body has been sent to JJ Hospital for postmortem.
