The marriage of a minor girl here was stopped today by a government official but none was arrested as both the families agreed to wait till the bride attained 18 years of age.

The girl is 14 years of age and a eighth standard student.

Dhupguri block development officer Subhankar Roy said he had come to know of the proposed marriage yesterday and had visited Deomali in Jalpaiguri district to convince the villagers and the bride's family against it as it would be illegal.

"Today the administration wedding was prevented from taking place after convincing the family," Roy said adding that none was arrested.

The families of the bride and groom have given a written undertaking to the police and the BDO that the girl will not be married off before she reaches 18 years of age, he added.
