A major accident was averted at Serampore railway station in Hooghly district as a locomotive pilot managed to stop a local train close behind another one on the same track this evening.
While 37339 Up Howrah-Tarakeswar local was stationary at platform no. 4 of Serampore station, 37851 Up Howrah-Burdwan local entered the same track behind it and managed to avert collision a little before 8 PM.
Serampore station is under Howrah-Burdwan section of the Eastern Railway.

"It was a serious issue as both the EMU locals came on the same track and were about to collide at Serampore station. A possible accident has been averted," Eastern Railway CPRO R N Mahapatra said here tonight.
"An inquiry has been ordered by the Eastern Railway authority. Divisional Railway Manager, Howrah Division, has reached the spot accompanied by his team of officials including safety experts," Mahapatra said.
It was being checked if the driver of the Howrah-Burdwan local overshoot the signal or there was problem in the signalling system, he said.
"We are happy that a large number of passengers are safe as the possible accident has been averted," he added.
