Constable H C Malsawmkima of the Mizoram Armed Police First Battalion, who decamped with service weapons has reportedly joined the Manipur-based Hmar insurgent group, senior police officers today said.
Police said Malsawmkima was met by one militant belonging to the Hmar People's Convention (Democrats) in Manipur after which he was taken to the outfit's camp.
He was known to have connection with the HPC(D) rebels before he joined the state Police, a senior officer said.
Malsawmkima, while on a sentry on Saturday night decamped with an Insas rifle issued to him, another AK-47 assault rifle and 150 rounds of ammunition from Mizoram-Manipur border Sakawrdai Police Outpost.
He surreptitiously entered Manipur with a stolen motorcycle via Zilthawchhuah and could not be nabbed even as a massive combing operation was launched.
