Mizoram Assembly, on the first day of its autumn session today, paid rich tributes to the former President APJ Abdul Kalam who died on July 27 last in Shillong.

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, who made obituary reference on the demise of Kalam, said that the former President was a great scientist but a simple and humble man who truly deserved to be called the 'People's President'.

Recalling Kalam's address to the state assembly on September 24, 2005, Lal Thanhawla said that the former took keen interests in development of Mizoram by suggesting some sectors including processing of bamboo and different fruits in the state.

Opposition group leader and former Lok Sabha member Vanlalzawma also said that he was the only president who visited the state twice.

A one minute silence was observed by the Assembly as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
