Congress today dismissed Narendra Modi's claim that his visit to Canada was first by an Indian Prime Minister in 42 years, and said Manmohan Singh had visited the North American country during his premiership in 2010.

Singh had visited Canada from June 26 to June 28 at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Stephan Harper and it was an official visit, Congress spokesman Anand Sharma said.

Winding up his visit to Canada, Modi today said in Vancouver "this was a historic visit, not because that an Indian Prime Minister is visiting here after 42 years but because after 42 years, the clouds of distance have gone away in a moment". Modi said this at a reception hosted in his honour by his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper.
