Unidentified persons stole an ATM located only a few meters away from a police station at Kannod in Madhya Pradesh in the wee hours of morning today.

They apparently tried to break open the SBI ATM at Bahirawad Naka, and failing to open it, removed and took away the entire machine with Rs 12 lakh inside, said Kannod police station in-charge Rajendra Chaturvedi.

The security guard deployed at the ATM booth was away, he said.

"The guard was away, having tea. He informed police about the incident today morning. The incident probably took place between 3 am and 4 am," the police officer said.

According to the bank officials, the ATM had Rs 12 lakh in cash inside.

Probe is on, said Chaturvedi.
