The Madhya Pradesh High Court today rejected an application filed by the senior Congress leader and Churhat MLA Ajay Singh seeking dismissal of an election petition filed against him.

A division bench headed by Justice G S Solanki said prima facie there was some merit in the petition.

Shartendru Tiwari, the petitioner, has challenged the validity of the election of Singh as an MLA on the ground that he spent much more than the statutory ceiling of Rs 16 lakh on his campaign.

Singh had argued in his application that his election expenditure had been validated by the district returning officer.

Dismissing the application, the High Court fixed December 10 as the next date of hearing.
