A 32-year-old suspect, picked up by police in connection with a murder, was found dead today shortly after he reportedly escaped police custody in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.

The mysterious death of Nazir Ahmad Mughal, a resident of Gujjar Pati village of Zirhama, prompted the police to start a magisterial inquest proceedings into the incident, a police spokesman said.

He said Mughal, who was in police custody in a case related to kidnapping and murder registered in police station Trehgam, complained of chest pain yesterday.

The spokesman said he was shifted to district hospital Kupwara for treatment and was attended by doctors.

However, after few hours he gave slip to police on the pretext of attending the call of nature, the spokesman said adding a search operation was immediately launched to trace him.

"This morning, his body was found near the compound wall of the district hospital," he said adding magisterial inquest proceedings have been initiated as per law strictly as per NHRC guidelines.
