Mourning processions, marked by self-flagellations, with a large number of Tazias and Alams (replicas of the tombs of the martyrs) were being taken out on the streets of major cities including Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Ujjain.

Muharram is observed by the Muslim community across the world in commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain along with his family and followers, who were killed in the Battle of Karbala in AD 680. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar which marks the beginning of the new Islamic year.

All India Muslim Teohar Committee Chairman Ausaf Shahmiri Khurram said more than 900 Tazias and Alams were taken out on major streets before immersion.

Elaborate security arrangements were made at different places in the city as a precautionary measure and the event passed off peacefully with no report of any untoward incident from the state, police said.
