Music can be played everywhere but one has to change the presentation style to tailor with the place and ambience, celebrated percussionist Bickram Ghosh says.
Advocating a 'standing classical concert', in the non-structured format in Kolkata's first authentic highway-themed cafe, Bickram said, "Such concerts need to take place in a happening night spot."
"If we conduct such a standing classical concert, I certainly would be in non-formal attires - not in kurta, pyjama but in denims and tee shirt. All we would attempt here is introducing classical music in a different avatar.
"The beat must gel with the unique energy level of the place," the 'Tagore lounge' drummer told PTI after the calypso-flavour musical show 'Let the River Flow' by reputed city musician Manojit Dutta and his young band group members.
Referring to the 'sanctity' of classical music, Bickram said, "There is a sanctity to every form of classical music. Can you expect to go to church and not hear choir music!"
"If today's audience see me drumming up beats over the 'Tabla on stand', there will be already the air of informality. I believe in energy, without which any music becomes lithe, lifeless and redundant. It will be situational music but not deviating from the main grammar," the globally known son of legendary table artiste Pt Sankar Ghosh, explained.
"I would implore authorities of Bikers Cafe, to make it a regular concert point. But we need a bigger set up to impart a full-fledged concert look. It can be for a select audience on a smaller scale where we can try a new fusion brand of highway genre music - me, Pt Tarun Bandyopadhyay in santoor,and Manojit and others. This could also urture a whole new breed of young talent," he said.
"Kolkata is now opening up to the whole new exciting format of lounge music. We now look forward to dish out calypso brand to the audience even from outside the precincts of Someplace Else or The Basement. It will be a regular affair," Manojit said.
