A Maoist was killed and an STF jawan was injured in an encounter between security personnel and ultras in Chhattisgarh's Bastar district today, police said.

The skirmish occurred late this afternoon in Raidongri-Rakasmetta forests under Kaknar police station limits when a joint team of District Reserve Group (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) was out on an anti-Maoist operation in the interiors of Kaknar, Bastar superintendent of police Sheikh Arif Hussain told PTI.

"While one Maoist was killed, a jawan sustained injuries in the face-off," he said.

During the operation, a group of naxals opened indiscriminate fire at the security personnel on a hill in the forests abutting Kaknar, ensuing a gun battle.

However, ultras fled after realising that the troopers are closing in on them.

"During search, the body of a naxal clad in 'uniform' along with one SLR rifle was recovered from the spot," the SP said, adding the injured STF constable, identified as Manish Jha, was shifted to a local hospital after reinforcement was rushed to the spot.

"As per the feedback received from the area, blood stains found at the spot indicated that some more naxals were either killed or injured in the incident," the SP said, adding a search operation was still underway in the region.
