NCM to seek from Karnataka govt on communal clashes

Taking serious note of the communal clashes in Mangaluru in Karnataka, National Commission for Minorities (NCM) today decided to seek a report from the state government on the incident that left some persons injured.

"NCM will seek report from the Karnataka government on communal clashes in Mangaluru and, thereafter decide on sending a team to investigate, if necessary," NCM member Captain Praveen Davar said.

He said the commission expects that the district administration and police would ensure that "the communal situation does not deteriorate and peace, harmony are completely restored".

Davar said, "We have taken a serious view of the situation".
 

Six people were injured as violence broke out when groups of people returning from an event organised by Sangh Parivar outfits were allegedly attacked with stones near a place of worship at Karaya in the district Friday night, the police had said.

VHP and Bajrang Dal had organised a programme at Puttur, about 50 km from Mangaluru, and violence erupted at nearby Karaya with stone pelting near a place of worship.

People belonging to the other community claimed they were attacked first. Police intervened and chased away the violent crowd which tried to block the road

The injured were admitted to a hospital at Puttur.

Security has been strengthened with additional reinforcements.
