Hitting back at Congress for raising doubts over the "genuineness" of encounter of eight SIMI activists by Madhya Pradesh police, MoS for HRD Mahendra Nath Pandey today said the erstwhile UPA government could never gather the courage to act strongly against such terrorists.

"BJP-led NDA is acting strongly against terrorists along the borders as well as inside our borders. The government showed its brave face by killing the SIMI activists in the encounter," he said here.

His reaction came after eight SIMI activists were killed in an alleged encounter with police on the outskirts of Bhopal, hours after they escaped from the high-security Central jail there killing a security guard yesterday.

Pandey also praised the Madhya Pradesh police for their "historic and brave work".

"Those raising doubts and questioning the state police are trying to weaken our country," he said.

"The SIMI activists not just killed a jail security guard but had also pulled off a daring prison break," Pandey said, adding that police action was an appropriate reply to such terrorists.

Responding to the controversial remarks of senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh, who questioned why only Muslims break out of jail and not Hindus, the Union Minister said, "The former CM's political shops have been shut down. He is trying to grab the opportunity to remain in limelight by making such remarks".
