New facilities at Beypore port

Kerala government was planning to implement Coastal Cargo Service in the state to increase quantity of goods being transported through sea, minister for Ports, Fisheries and Excise, K Babu said today.

Inaugurating modern reach stacker to handle inter cargo containers and a Rs six crore 750 BHP Power Tug- MT Malabar- to help ease toeing of cargo vessels into the port, he said that ports from Thiruvananthapuram to north Kerala will be connected through this service.

To start with, coastal service will be operational between Azhikkal in Kannur district to Beypore from October this year, the minister said.

The new facilities will speed up the container loading and unloading process and aims to increase the quantity being transported through sea, he said.
 

The port department is planning to acquire 3.83 acres of land for extension and improvement of the existing facilities at Beypore port.

Vizhinjam port will start functioning from December this year, Babu added.
