The newly appointed Chairman of the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Vishram Jamdar, who is in the thick of a controversy over his appointment, today acknowledged that he is a RSS swayamsevak and proud to have been groomed in "RSS culture".

The appointment of Jamdar, a senior RSS leader as the new chairman of prestigious Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), formerly the Visevesarya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE), by HRD Minister Smriti Irani by allegedly overlooking four other aspirants stoked a row.

Justifying his appointment, Jamdar said he might have been selected for the post because of his work during his one decade stint as on VNIT Board of Governors.

He was earlier appointed on this Board in 2002 by the then HRD minister Arjun Singh.

Jamdar was asked about reports that he had written to the Irani seeking the post of VNIT chairman reminding her that he was a RSS swayamsevak and Nagpur was his home.

"Yes I am a RSS swayamsevak and that doesn't make me ineligible for the post. I am proud that I was groomed by the RSS culture and my RSS credentials should not be linked with this," he said.
