NHRC notice to Rajasthan Govt over rape by police officer

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has served a notice on Rajasthan Government over reports of rape by a police officer at an outpost in Jhunjhunu.

The Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that an ASI posted in Chanana police post in Jhunjhunu raped a woman whom he had called to the outpost on the pretext of resolving the case of her husband who was in police custody.

Reportedly, the police officer threatened the victim not to disclose the incident to anyone. "The country is fighting against the menace of crime against women. The contents of the press report, carried on July 17, 2015, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the woman," the Commission said.
 

Accordingly, NHRC has issued a notice to the Rajasthan Chief Secretary, seeking a report in the matter within four weeks.
