A total of nine candidates filed their papers today on the day of filing of nominations for the April 12 Malappuram Lok Sabha bypoll.
Eight independents and the BJP's Ramachandran filed nominations before the District Collector Amit Meena, official sources said.
A total of 16 candidates are in the fray, the sources said.
Scrutiny of nominations will take place tomorrow,they said.
Former Kerala Minister and IUML National General Secretary P K Kunhalikutty is the UDF candidate whileDYFI leader M B Faizal is the LDF candidate.
The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of IUML leader and former Union Minister E Ahamed.
