Nine sent to judicial custody for hunting deer

Nine persons were today sent to judicial custody by a court here for allegedly killing an adult deer and consuming its meat in Kaziranga extended territory area in Assam's Golaghat district.

Acting on a tip-off, forest personnel of Kaziranga National Park had arrested two persons from Kruhabari Khotiakhole area bordering Karbi Anglong on Sunday evening and following their interrogation, seven others were arrested since yesterday.

The accused, booked under Wildlife Protection Act, were today produced before the Golaghat Chief Judicial Magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

A mature male sambhar deer had crossed NH-37 last evening and entered Kruhabari Khotiakhole where it was taking shelter when the group killed the animal and distributed its flesh among nine families.
 

The arrested were identified as Ranjit Gorh and Khogen Gorh, who were first picked up on Sunday, while the seven others were Mahesh Gorh, Gobin Gorh, Biku Bhumiz, Klun Bhumiz, Ganesh Bhumiz, Bubai Gorh and Nirmal Bhumiz.
