In its attempt to equip Delhi woman with self defence tools, the government today decided to exempt chilli spray from value added tax (VAT).
In the wake of December 16 gang-rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced withdrawal of 12.5 per cent VAT on chilli spray to be used as a self defence tool.
"It is our duty to empower women by way of self-defence...," Dikshit said while presenting the 2013-14 Budget.
The city had witnessed spurt in crime against women with four rapes being reported on an average everyday this year, which is almost double the last year's rate.
