With an eye on assembly elections in 2017, the ruling Congress in Uttarakhand today asked Chief Minister Harish Rawat to resume the scheme of paying a monthly unemployment allowance to the state's jobless youth immediately.

In a letter to Rawat, Pradesh Congress Committee President Kishore Upadhyay said he has taken note of the several requests made by the various organisations of unemployed youths who want the scheme resumed.

The complainants said they feel 'cheated' as the process of verifying their eligibility for receiving the allowance was 'very complicated,' Upadhyay said in his letter to Rawat.

Under the scheme, the state government used to pay an allowance of Rs 750 and Rs 1500 per month to targeted beneficiaries depending on their educational qualifications.

Upadhyay said unemployed youths can play a vital role in making or marring the prospects of any political party.
