A 21-member 'people's court' delivering daily judgements with a nominal fee has caught the imagination of the people in the Taunkpuri Tanda village of the district.

The ten-year-old court being run by Tanzeem Falahe Muslameen at Taunkpuri Tanda takes up cases related to divorce, dowry, eve-teasing and other atrocities against women, Mohammed Ahmad, President of the organisation said today.

"Plead your case before the people's court and get the judgement the same day," he said.

The court contains 21 registered members who are called 'Panchas' selected by residents of the village and most importantly the litigants abide by the judgement, Ahmad said.

The complainants can register their cases with a fee of Rs 500. They do not have to repeatedly knock at the doors of the law courts and advocates.

"The people thus save thousands of rupees which is deemed as compulsory expenditure in the existing Indian judicial system," Ahmad said.

Thousands of disputes have so far been settled by this court, he added.
