Photojournalist hurt as separatists clash with police in J&K

Clashes broke out between pro- separatist protesters and security forces in Nowhatta area of the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir here in which a photojournalist was injured, police said.

Soon after the Friday prayers, a large number of youths, demanding the release of political prisoners before Eid-ul-Fitr, raised pro-freedom slogans and tried to march towards Nowhatta Chowk, the police said.

As security forces tried to disperse them, they started pelting stones, triggering intense clashes between the two sides, they said.

Police fired dozens of warning shots and tear smoke shells to bring situation under control.

In the clashes, a Press Trust of India photojournalist, Sheikh Irfan, was injured. He was he was hit on his forehead by a stone and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
 

His condition is stable now.
