Senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh today joined the voices within the party who are not in favour of naming Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate ahead of the elections, saying India does not have a presidential system of democracy.
He said naming of prime ministerial candidate ahead of the polls was a "new phenomena" but a name would emerge on the numbers that the country throws up after polls.
"Personally I'm of the view that this whole clamour for announcing a name is a new phenomena. If the Congress party is stumbling in doing what it has to do about who is their number one is because of the reality. You don't know what the country is going to throw up by way of numbers," Singh told CNN-IBN.
He said, "We are not a Presidential system and the necessity of a Parliamentary system is to depend on the numbers that emerge (after the polls)."
Singh's comments came a day after BJP chief Rajnath Singh without naming Modi said, "Our choice of prime ministerial candidate is obvious and it is now the turn of Congress."
On Thursday, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh had said it was too early for BJP to take a call on its prime ministerial candidate and a decision in this regard will be taken at an appropriate time.
