A constable was allegedly murdered by a bootlegger couple here when he went to their house to check whether they stocked a cache of country made liquor, police said today.

Pramod Avadhwasi (38), attached with Kuvadava police station here, went to the house of Rama Bhakhodiya and her husband Haku last night on a tip-off that they were in possession of a huge quantity of illegal liquor.

According to police, before leaving for the house of the accused, Pramod had informed his colleague at Kuvada police station.

Police suspect that the couple allegedly attacked Pramod with a sharp object and dumped him on the Rajkot-Kuvadava road.

Police were informed about bleeding Pramod lying on the road by a local, following which the constable was rushed to a local hospital in a critical condition, police said.

However, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, they said.

A complaint was lodged against the couple who are absconding, police added.
