Twenty-one Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers were briefly taken into preventive custody from a 'garba' venue here, police said today.

"Police detained 21 VHP workers last night from a 'garba' venue in Sola area as part of precautionary measures to prevent any communal tension in the city," Inspector S M Patel of Sola Police Station said.

All of them were later released, he said.

According to city-based VHP leader Raju Patel, the outfit's workers were at the venue to check whether any member of a minority community had been allowed inside to take part in 'Garba' (a traditional Gujarat dance form), organised during the popular 'Navratri' festival.

The right-wing outfit has warned against allowing minority community members at garba events, which they said is open only for Hindus.
