A local court today sentenced a police official to life imprisonment in a 24 year-old case after holding him guilty of beating a Dalit youth to death and hiding his body.

Additional Sessions Judge D P N Singh held the then Bairiya Police Station Incharge, Ram Sanjeevan Sachan, guilty of murdering Patru Gond of Madhubani village.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.26 lakh on him. Sachan had brought Gond to the police station on the night of April 3, 1990 where he was beaten to death and his body removed, prosecution said.

Gond's father had lodged an FIR against Sachan and four other policemen. A chargesheet was filed in the court following an inquiry, prosecution said that the other four have however been let off due to lack of evidence.
