A mahapanachayat called by BJP and Bajrang Dal workers, alleging that residents of Loni area were trying to evict a family, was today put off with police invoking section 144 of CrPC that bans the assembly of four or more persons.

"Members of two families had clashed over some issue on November 27. Later, some people started pressurising one of the families to move out of the area. We had called a mahapanchayat, which was to be addressed by BJP MLA Sangeet Som, to seek justice for the family," party leader Nand Kishore Gujjar said.

"However, police did not allow us to go on with the mahapanchayat, citing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC imposed in the area," he claimed.

Som, BJP MLA from Sardhana, accompanied the family at a meeting with Superintended of Police Deepak Kumar and demanded that a "fair probe" be ordered into the matter, the BJP leader said, adding that the SP assured of ordering an inquiry into it.

Gujjar said that some of the BJP and Bajrang Dal members also protested against police not allowing the mahapanchayat.
